File, Don't Pile
Try filing your clothes in drawers or bins. Not only can you see what you have and fit more inside the drawer or bin, but you can also swap out the seasons in a snap! Simply store the previous season's box or bin on the top shelf of your closet.
Make sure that anything you store is clean before you store it. I unpacked my kids' winter coats from last winter and discovered that my son's coat was put away with salt stains and mud. Not really sure how that one happened!
Make sure to label any bins that you store. Clear bins are always less frustrating because you can actually see what's inside, but labeling will also save in the frustration. If you're lucky, and get to go on a winter vacation to a warm destination, and need to find clothes to pack, it's always easier if it's labeled.
If you cannot store each season in each person's bedroom closet, then store everyone's seasonal clothes in the same spot in the house for easy retrieval. No reason to put Dad's clothes in the garage and the kids' in the crawl space.
